Kırkpınar Wrestlers
The province was founded by Odris tribe originated from Trak race in the 5th century B.C as a city and was called with different names during history by different nations. The province was conquered by Murat I in 1361 and the name “Edirne” was given in this empror’s reign. Because of its strategic location, Edirne had been the second capital of the Ottoman Empire for 92 years until the conquest of Istanbul in 1453.

Selimiye Mosque
The city is famous for it’s mosques, museums and Historical Kırkpınar Wrestling Festivals. Selimiye Mosque is the most famous structure in the city and is worth seeing. Authentic products such as soaps with scents and marchpane are natives of the city. Apart from having one of the biggest Jewish settlements in the region; Edirne has one of the oldest covered bazaars of the Ottoman Empire. Historical Kırkpınar Wrestling is the oldest sport competition that survived until now and has a very important place in the Turkish Culture. Festivals of Kırkpınar Wrestling are held in Edirne every year and attract visitors from all over the world. This years festival will take place in the second week of July.
